Gwadar’s Baluchistan Haq Do Tehreek Chief Released From Jail

Haq Do Tehreek chief Maulana Hidayatur Rehman has been released.

Baluchistan QUETTA: Gwadar’s Haq Do Tehreek (HDT) chief Maulana Hidayatur Rehman was on Tuesday released from jail on bail after more than four months.

Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman, who is also a local leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami, was released from judicial lock-up in Gwadar.  He thanked JI Emir Siraj-ul-Haq, Lashkari Raisani, Humayun Kurd and his lawyers for their efforts for his release. He vowed to continue the struggle for the rights of Gwadar.

On May 18, the Supreme Court of Pakistan granted bail to Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman on the submission of surety bonds worth Rs300,000 and ordered his release.

A day earlier, a sessions court in Gwadar sent him to the judicial lockup after his appearance before the court. Speaking to journalists during his court appearance, Hidayat-ur-Rehman decried that the orders of the apex court have not yet reached the sessions court despite a span of five days.

He maintained that he has told his lawyer not to submit any further petition. Hidayat said he is a political activist and has been in jail for over four months in a false murder case.

Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman made the headlines last year for leading a series of protests in Gwadar Baluchistan for several months. He has been campaigning against illegal trawling off Gwadar’s shores, excessive security checkpoints, and inadequate trade along the Eastern Baluchistan- Western Baluchistan Iran border.

Maulana Hidayat-ur-Rehman was arrested in Gwadar on January 13 over the killing of a policeman by unidentified assailants during the protests held by HDT supporters in December last year.

On Dec 22 last year, a police constable was killed in Gwadar during clashes with HDT activists. Police constable Yasir was shot in the neck after violence erupted during the protest at Hashmi Chowk and died on the spot.

Police registered a first information report (FIR) against Hidayatur Rehman on charges of murder, attempt to murder, provoking the people for violence and other charges.

The movement advocating for the rights of the people of Gwadar was launched in November 2021 led by Maulana Rehman.
