Shaal: As Pakistan gears up for General elections, a prominent organisation of Balochistan has expressed apprehensions that the military would step up atrocities against the people of the occupied region and “create a civil-war like situation” in the garb of electioneering.

Baloch National Movement (BNM) fears that the Pakistani regime would want to spill blood in Balochistan during the upcoming “so-called elections”.

“During Pakistan’s elections in the past, there was noticeable rise in human rights violations and the incidence of enforced disappearances (in Balochistan),” BNM spokesperson said in a statement.

It noted that the Pakistani regime employs the tactic of ‘enforced disappearances’ as a tool to coerce individuals into voting and sowing fear through increased state oppression.

The spokesman said killing of people by the military and enforced disappearances have escalated to a troubling extent in Balochistan.

“Additionally, the process of recovering forcefully missing persons has been experiencing a decrease,” he said.

“The Pakistan Army is conspiring to generate a civil war-like scenario in Balochistan and cause extensive violence during the upcoming elections,” the BNM spokesman said.

“This move is to mask their crimes against humanity by portraying it as a political or tribal conflict,” he said.

“In occupied Balochistan, people are forced to participate in fake elections by the Pakistani armed forces” and the election candidates engage in verbal attacks, he pointed out.

“The Baloch people must comprehend the circumstances and employ their wisdom to foil the occupying State’s intentions,” he added.

He said the atrocities and violence being perpetrated by the Pakistani Army in Balochistan have already led to a rise in mental illness and suicide among youths and an overall increase in fear and anxiety in society.
