Are Pak N-weapons safe from terror strikes?

New Delhi: There have been series of terror attacks in Pakistan after al Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden was killed by US Navy SEALs in Abbottabad. Concerns are being raised about the security of Pakistani military installations and its nuclear assets following Monday’s brazen attack on Pakistan naval base, PNS Mehran, and Pakistan Air Force’s (PAF) Faisal airbase by a group of terrorists.Pakistan’s nuclear assets are spread across the country with many of them in the north western part of the country which has seen most of the terror strike and is infested with groups like al Qaeda, Taliban and Lashkar-e-Toiba.

The nuclear reactors are in Karachi, Chashma, Khushab and Rawalpindi while the weaponisation takes place at Wah and Kahtua, which also has uranium enrichment facilities. Nuclear weapon testing takes place in Chagai Hills of Balochistan.

Taliban dominated area of Swat, Dir, Malakand are in close proximity to many nuclear installations.

Monday’s attack has raised fresh concerns about the safety of Pakistani nuclear weapons and installations with even military bases now coming under the radar of terror groups.

In 2007 suicide bombers attacked near Kamra and Sargodha Air Force bases. The Wah Ordnance Depot near Islamabad saw a strike by two suicide bombers in August 2008.

Two motorcycle borne suicide bombers blow themselves up after entering Naval War College in Lahore in March 2008 and Pakistan’s Army Headquarters in Rawalpindi was attacked in October 2009 and in December 2009 a suicide bomber attacked Pakistan Navy Headquarters in Islamabad.
